This is the sequence we recommend for readers who want a clear, non-overwhelming path from 'thinking about keto' to 'confidently doing keto.' Follow it in order.

Prep phase — 3 days before you start

  1. Read our What Is Keto guide and the electrolytes primer.
  2. Take baseline measurements: weight, waist, chest, hips.
  3. Photograph your fridge and pantry. Donate or set aside all sugar, flour, cereal, chips, and juice.
  4. Do your first grocery haul from the shopping list above.
  5. Fill a large water bottle with electrolytes and place it where you'll see it.

Week 1 — Adaptation

Focus: get carbs under 30 g, eat when hungry, salt everything. Do not exercise intensely.

  • Days 1–2: Feel normal. Water weight drops.
  • Days 3–5: 'Keto flu' window. Rest, drink electrolytes, sleep 8+ hours.
  • Days 6–7: Energy stabilizes. Weight down 3–8 lb (mostly water).

Week 2 — Rhythm

Focus: build a routine. Pick 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 3 dinners you like and rotate them.

  • Hunger begins to decrease.
  • Consider intermittent fasting only if it feels natural, not forced.
  • Add one form of gentle movement daily — walking, mobility, yoga.

Week 3 — Fat adaptation

  • Energy noticeably steadier.
  • Sleep often improves.
  • Fat loss becomes measurable (typically 1–2 lb per week).
  • Cravings for sweets fade dramatically.

Week 4 — Optimization

Now that you're adapted, start refining:

  • Try new recipes to expand your rotation.
  • Reintroduce moderate-intensity exercise.
  • Track macros for 3–4 days to check your accuracy.
  • Retake your measurements.

Day 30 checkpoint

Ask yourself: energy? sleep? hunger? mood? weight? waist? Journal the answers. If most are positive, keep going. If not, review your carb intake and electrolytes — those are the two most common culprits.

Frequently asked questions

What if I mess up on day 5?

You have not ruined anything. Get back on plan at the very next meal. One slip is a data point, not a failure.

When can I add exercise back?

Gentle walking from day 1. Moderate cardio at week 2. Full-intensity training from week 3 onward if you feel ready.
