Your First Week on Keto: What to Expect Day-by-Day
A realistic diary of the first seven days — physical, mental, and emotional — so nothing takes you by surprise.

The first week decides whether you'll succeed on keto or quit. Knowing what to expect prevents small discomforts from becoming reasons to give up.
Day 1 — Excitement, then hunger
You wake up energized and ready. By afternoon, your body is looking for carbs and not finding them. Salt your food, drink water, and eat a real meal with fat and protein. Do not white-knuckle it.
Day 2 — Bathroom trips and thirst
As insulin drops, your kidneys dump sodium and water. Expect to urinate more often. Drink at least 2.5 L of water and salt every meal.
Day 3 — The wall
This is usually the toughest day. Glycogen is depleted, ketone production is still ramping up, and your brain is briefly under-fueled. Symptoms: fatigue, headache, irritability, brain fog. Fix: 500 mg sodium + 300 mg magnesium + broth + a nap if possible.
Day 4 — Slight improvement
The worst usually passes. You may still feel low, but you'll notice you're less hungry than you expected. Trust the process.
Day 5 — Clarity returns
Ketones are now measurable. Energy stabilizes. Brain fog lifts. You may even feel unusually clear-headed.
Day 6 — Hunger drops
This is the moment many people notice for the first time: they forget to eat lunch. Not because they're forcing it — because they simply aren't hungry.
Day 7 — First reflection
Weigh in (once). You'll likely be down 3–8 pounds. Most of that is water, but the psychological win is real. Journal how you feel. Commit to another two weeks and reassess.
What to keep on hand all week
- Bone broth (salty and warming)
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Cheese cubes and olives
- Salted mixed nuts (macadamia and pecans especially)
- Sparkling water with lemon and salt
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to feel worse before better?
Yes. Days 3–5 are typically the low point. Electrolytes are usually the fix.
Can I quit halfway through the week?
You can, but you'll have gone through the hardest part without collecting any of the payoff. We recommend pushing through to day 14 minimum.
