Starting keto does not have to be complicated. Most beginners overthink it — they buy exotic ingredients, download five apps, and quit within two weeks. This guide strips it back to what actually matters.
The three rules that matter most
- Keep net carbs under 30 g per day.
- Eat protein at every meal — roughly a palm-sized serving.
- Add fat to taste — enough to feel satisfied, not stuffed.
That is 90% of keto. Everything else is optimization.
Your first shopping trip
Buy these basics and you will not go hungry:
- Two dozen eggs
- 2 lb ground beef (80/20)
- 1 rotisserie chicken
- Bag of frozen cauliflower rice
- 1 lb bacon
- Large bag of baby spinach
- Head of romaine
- 2 avocados
- Block of cheddar and a wedge of parmesan
- Olive oil, butter, salt, pepper, garlic powder
Your first-week menu (no recipe required)
- Breakfast option A: 3 eggs cooked in butter + 2 strips bacon
- Breakfast option B: Greek yogurt + a handful of berries + walnuts
- Lunch option A: Rotisserie chicken + big salad with olive oil and vinegar
- Lunch option B: Ground beef browned with onion, topped with cheese, over spinach
- Dinner option A: Salmon + roasted broccoli in butter
- Dinner option B: Bunless burger + side of avocado + green salad
Manage electrolytes from day 1
The single best thing you can do to prevent keto flu: salt your food generously and drink at least 2.5 liters of water per day. Add a magnesium supplement (300–400 mg glycinate) at night. This is not optional.
What to expect emotionally
Days 3–5 are the low point. You may feel tired, moody, or 'off.' This is normal and will pass. Keep meals simple, sleep more, and remind yourself the discomfort is a transition — not a permanent state.
What NOT to do
- Do not start counting calories on day 1. Focus on carbs first, everything else later.
- Do not buy 'keto' packaged snacks. They are gateway drugs back to cravings.
- Do not weigh yourself daily. Weekly at most.
- Do not compare your day 5 to a stranger's day 90.
When to reach out for help
If you feel dizzy, faint, or unwell beyond mild keto flu — especially if you take medication — check in with your doctor. Blood pressure and blood sugar medication doses often need adjustment quickly on keto.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have coffee?
Yes. Black, with heavy cream, or with butter — all fine. Avoid sugar and flavored syrups.
How much water should I drink?
At least 2.5 liters daily, more if you're active. Ketosis has a mild diuretic effect the first two weeks.
Do I need supplements?
Magnesium is highly recommended. Potassium and sodium can usually come from food if you eat vegetables and salt generously.
