One of the biggest keto obstacles for parents: 'my family won't eat this.' The good news — you almost never need to cook two meals. You need to add a starch side for them.

The base-plus-starch model

Build every dinner as a keto base + optional starch. Everyone eats the same protein and vegetable; non-keto eaters add rice, pasta, or bread.

10 keto dinners that always work for kids

  • Burgers (with buns for kids, without for you)
  • Taco bowls (tortillas for kids, greens for you)
  • Roast chicken with roasted vegetables
  • Meatballs and marinara over pasta (spaghetti squash for you)
  • Cheeseburger casserole
  • Pizza (cauliflower crust for you, regular for them)
  • BBQ pork shoulder with slaw (bun on the side)
  • Chicken parmesan over zoodles (breaded for them)
  • Salmon with lemon butter and any vegetable
  • Breakfast-for-dinner: eggs, bacon, and a fruit bowl

Kid-friendly keto snacks

  • Cheese sticks and olives
  • Hard-boiled eggs with everything seasoning
  • Deli meat and cheese roll-ups
  • Full-fat yogurt with berries
  • Cucumbers with ranch
  • Peanut butter (natural, no sugar added) on celery

How to handle kids' desserts

You do not have to eat what your kids eat. Buy the treats they enjoy; store them where you won't see them. Make one weekly 'grown-up' keto dessert (chocolate mousse, cheesecake bites) for yourself so you never feel excluded.

The family sit-down effect

Kids don't care if you skip the bread — they care if you're at the table. Presence beats macro perfection every time.

Frequently asked questions

Should my kids do keto?

Not without medical supervision. Growing bodies have different needs. Focus on removing added sugar and refined grains for them — that's the highest-value intervention.

What if my partner isn't on keto?

The base-plus-starch model handles this too. Bread/rice/pasta on the side; you skip.
