Keto doesn't mean giving up restaurants — it means ordering strategically. Once you've done it a dozen times, it becomes second nature.

The universal keto restaurant framework

  1. Order a protein + a green vegetable.
  2. Ask them to cook it in butter or olive oil.
  3. Skip the starch (bread, rice, potatoes, pasta).
  4. Ask for extra sauce or fat on the side.
  5. Verify no sugar in marinades or seasoning blends.

Restaurant-by-restaurant guide

Steakhouses

Effortless. Steak + salad + green vegetable + butter. Skip bread service and dessert.

Italian

Order any protein — chicken parm, meat and cheese board, grilled fish. Skip pasta, bread, and breading. Ask for extra olive oil.

Mexican

Fajitas without tortillas, extra guacamole, salsa, sour cream, cheese. Skip beans, rice, and chips.

Chinese and Thai

Trickier — most sauces contain sugar or cornstarch. Safest options: steamed protein and vegetables with garlic sauce on the side, egg drop soup, moo shu without pancakes.

Japanese

Sashimi is perfect. Skip rice, tempura, and sweet sauces. Miso soup is fine. Ask for soy sauce instead of teriyaki.

Fast food

  • Chipotle: salad bowl with double meat + guac + cheese + salsa
  • Five Guys: bunless burger + bacon + cheese + fresh toppings
  • Chick-fil-A: grilled nuggets + side salad + avocado ranch
  • Starbucks: black coffee, or coffee with heavy cream

The one phrase that solves 90% of situations

'I'm on a low-carb diet — can you skip the bread/rice/pasta and add extra vegetables instead?' Servers hear this constantly. It works.

Frequently asked questions

What if there's no keto option?

There's always something — a burger without bun, a steak, or a Cobb salad. Worst case: a large green salad with olive oil, protein of choice, and a side of avocado.

Can I drink alcohol at dinner?

Dry red or white wine (3 g/glass), spirits with soda water and lime, ultra-low-carb beer occasionally. Skip cocktails, sweet wines, and beer.
