TL; DR
- Gemini on Wear OS currently requires an active internet connection.
- Now Google seems to be working on enabling limited Gemini commands even without wireless data.
- These can include opening applications, as well as working with timers and alarms.
Because virtual assistants and AI agents can be useful, getting them often means being connected to a data connection. Our calls are usually not a waste of money, as the phone connection is usually very good – and sometimes we even have options to run it locally with no data at all. But smartwatches are very fiddly, don’t have the tools for local support, and often rely on phones for data. If you’re wearing your watch but left your phone at home, you’re out of luck – or at least you are have it was.
That could change soon, however, based on the updates we’ve recently seen in Google Gemini on Wear OS. Now, when you try to do anything with Gemini on your watch without a data connection, you will see an error message:

While checking the new version of Google 1.29.343.892969432.release, however, we notice new threads that appear talking about Gemini offline operation:
Code
To cancel an alarm offline, please include the time with your command.
To remove an alarm offline, please include the time with your command.
Here, the device prepares to provide messages that provide the necessary steps for offline operation – that is, to specify the time to prepare the alarm.
In addition, we find another language that improves the separation between Gemini features that work offline, and those that require an active internet connection:
Code
"I can't do that offline, but I'm still here for other things."
So, what exactly are those “other things”? We’ve found a number of other tiles that look like they’re part of this effort, but don’t mention the obvious offline functionality:
Code
"I couldn't find any alarms to cancel."
"I couldn't find any timers to pause."
Starting stopwatch
"Sorry, I can't set timers for that long on this device."
Opening %1$s…
However, these are just a few examples, and we are seeing many more. But instead of rehashing all of that, here’s what looks like a very short list of all the major Gemini device management features that seem to be ready for offline operation:

At least, that list seems to be responsible for all the features mentioned in the text channels that we have discovered so far – but that does not mean that it is complete, and Google may want to expand (or limit) the list before any of this starts.
It’s also unclear at this point whether any of these are meant to be exclusive to the Pixel Watch, or whether Google might be planning to restrict its availability. That may include support for only certain SoCs, or other hardware requirements that we still don’t know about. We’ll keep an eye out for future updates, and hopefully we can get a full picture of where Google is headed with this update.
⚠️ An APK hack it helps to predict future features of the service based on the code in progress. However, it is possible that such pre-specified features may not make it to public release.
