When it comes to internet services, we all want maximum speed and reliability. When we click on a link and hear just a few seconds, it can feel like forever. We expect immediate, unlimited access when we need information quickly for work, publishing news, watching movies and competing with friends in sports.
Often, the cause of the problem is the router in our homes.
A router is important when there are many devices in the home trying to connect to the internet at the same time. A router helps to strengthen the Wi-Fi connection for devices that are not directly connected to the internet via a cable.
When a router is working properly, it’s like an air traffic controller, making sure data gets where it needs to go. Many devices in the home, including phones, smart TVs, computers and laptops receive and send data. But when the router is not working properly, it can cause a problem. You may experience slow internet service, freezes during your meetings and other problems that come with living in the digital age.
There are simple, effective solutions. But first, be aware of the signs of a failing router. You may have had some of these:
>> Red lights are red flags: A malfunctioning router’s lights may turn red or make strange sounds. These are signs that the router may be malfunctioning.

>> Unable to connect: An old router may not be able to host many devices. You and your family may have trouble connecting to the router, and as a result there is no Wi-Fi connection or the connection is weak. Even if you can move your router and your devices closer together, this may not solve the problem.
>> Frequent interruptions: You may be in the middle of a conversation, movie or game when everything suddenly ends. This is another sign that your router may not be working properly. This may mean that the router’s hardware or software needs to be updated to maintain strong connections between your devices and the network. Your router may have firmware, or software built into the hardware, that must also be updated from time to time.
>> Routers that automatically reset: Sometimes, routers have to be reset to keep your devices connected. However, when your router restarts itself, sometimes daily or twice a day, it can disrupt your internet service. It’s usually a sign that it’s time to replace your router.
One of the best ways to determine if connection problems are a router problem is to use an internet speed test tool, such as Ookla Speedtest. Connect your laptop or other device at home and test the speed. Then connect your devices to another network and test the speed. You will immediately know if the speed problem is related to your router.
In addition to improving speed and connectivity, updating your router offers security benefits. As an intermediary between your devices and the internet, an upgraded router acts as a defense against internet attacks. Older routers with the latest security standards will not provide this protection.
The best solution is to upgrade to a new router model for better performance and security. Check out router reviews to find out which one is right for your family. Fortunately, when you switch to a new internet service provider, most will provide you with a router so that everyone in your household can be fully equipped to access the internet immediately.
