Introduction
The Watch S4 is probably Xiaomi’s most popular watch right now. Our popular S4 review can prove that. But while the full-sized S4 was focused on casualness, the Watch S4 41mm is locked into luxury.
It is also very feminine in both design and size. The 41mm model isn’t quite a women’s watch, but it’s close enough. We’ve got the smallest watch for men’s slimmer wrists here at GSMArena HQ.
Ours is the Sunset Gold model, and it’s the most exclusive version of the Watch S4 41mm. You also have the choice of black, white and mint, although the difference is the choice of straps and the unique element that adorns the rotating crown.
The cases of the Black, White, and Mint green models are all shiny silver. The straps can be leather or fluororubber, although the Sunset Gold has a special strap, which is a mesh of finely woven metal wires.
Each color has a special decoration added to the crown – Sunset Gold has a “lab-grown” diamond, while the other three models have a colored base.
The Watch S4 41mm ships with the same wireless charger as the 47mm model (and it seems like all Xiaomi watches). You should match the two charger pins with their sockets on the back of the watch. Not a good one – we’d love a local charger of your choice.
Build quality and features
The Xiaomi Watch S4 41mm is not only smaller than the regular S4 but also has a slightly different design. The main difference is the flush watch bezel. The 47mm model has a screw-on bezel that protrudes over the glass, the 41mm model’s bezel is attached to the glass and offers no protection.
The lugs are attached to the body of the watch, and the strap is attached to them (not the watch itself). In the case of our Gold unit, you’ll find it difficult to find a third-party compatible strap.
There are two buttons on the Watch S4 41mm – the crown, which both rotates and acts as a pusher, and the “power-slash-function” button below. Slide the crown to open the app menu, and rotate it to move different widgets on the home screen.
The function button will open the toggles screen with a click and can quickly launch applications or settings with a long press.
The strap has a magnetic clasp, which is very convenient to put the watch on or take it off quickly.
But this type of clasp is not only dangerous to exercise and follow health, but it is an insurmountable obstacle. I tried to track my sleep with the Watch S4 41mm on four different nights, only to wake up to find the watch had slipped from my wrist and ended up somewhere under the sheets – not good.
And forget about fast-paced exercises like running, football or basketball. The clock only falls after the first contact with a weak effect.
So there will be no continuous health tracking, even though the watch has a health center. There are more than 150 sports methods, tracking deep sleep, and even a skin temperature sensor for predicting a woman’s cycle. However, the strap clasp mechanism proved to be a clear obstacle in this regard, essentially forcing you to choose between style and health.
Magnetic Cover
A very good show. It is a 1.32-inch 466x466px AMOLED panel with a refresh rate of 60Hz, and a maximum brightness of 1,500 points. The panel has excellent contrast, is razor sharp, and is visible even in bright light – top marks all around!
The display is flat, very nice
Unlike many other smartwatches, which have a Rolodex of widgets and software on the side, the Xiaomi Watch S4 displays them in a standing list. This change took some getting used to, but shouldn’t be a problem for long-time users of the watch. Here, swiping from the right edge helps you change the watch face. It’s faster than any other clock, where you’ll need to click and hold it first.
Battery life
Xiaomi claims 8 days of battery life with light use. That drops to 4 days of normal use, and 3 days of heavy use. The most powerful application has everything at all times – always on display, notifications, health monitoring (including heart rate, SpO2, and stress), minimal exercise, and sleep tracking.
There is Xiaomi’s improved T1 SoC to help with efficiency and make the most of the 320mAh power pack.
In our practice, we had just started our fifth day when the clock went dead. That included three workouts, always on, notifications turned on, and all the health tracking features used throughout the day.
While it won’t match the best players in the smart wearable space, like Huawei and Honor, it’s still better than what you’d get from most WearOS smartwatches or the Apple Watch.
The end
Xiaomi Watch S4 41mm is good at what it does. It has a lot of features, solid specs, a great display, well built, and most importantly, it’s beautiful and fun to own and use. Get one of the fluororubber bands, and you’ve got a complete health and fitness tracker for €100. It’s a solid deal.
If you spend around €200, you can get the Sunset Gold model we tested, which is all about looks and feel. It’s beautiful, unique, and has character in a way that is usually reserved for dedicated watches. It’s not really meant to be used as a fitness-focused watch, and that’s understandable. On the other hand, using it as a simple watch and not a full tracker means you’ll get close to 8 days of estimated battery life!
